Gary “The Gut” Goombah : Week 10
Week 9 was underwhelming on the gambling front. Gary “The Gut” Goombah felt good but nonetheless fell below .500, going 2-3 for the week. Think of this as a short cold front on our way to hot weather. (ALERT! GARY HAS ANOTHER “LOCK OF THE YEAR” IN WEEK 10 (PAY NO ATTENTION TO HIS 0-1 RECORD IN 2018 LOCK OF THE YEAR SELECTIONS)
In retrospect, Gary made some poor picks. He went against home underdogs and lost with teams that didn’t have their starting QB. Maybe that was, shall we say, misinformed. Or unwise. Yeah, let’s go with unwise. Anyway, let’s recap what happened.
Week 9 NCAA Selections (All selections are ATS. Point spreads are from Friday’s Chicago Tribune.)
Syracuse Orangemen (+1.5) over N.C. State Wolfpack – Gary’s got a “Gut” feeling on the ‘Cuse. The Orange can score with anyone. PICK: Syracuse……. FINAL SCORE: Syracuse 51 N.C. State 41……. a 10 point win = VICTORY!
Texas A&M Aggies (+2) over Mississippi St. Bulldogs – PICK: Texas A&M……. FINAL SCORE: Mississippi St. 28 Texas A&M 13……. a 15 point loss = LOSS.
Boise St. Broncos (-9) over Air Force Falcons – Last week Dave Nash picked against Boise. Now that Gary is back in charge, he’s defying Nasher and picking one of his fave historic teams to bet on…..Boise! PICK: Boise St……….. FINAL SCORE: Boise St. 48 Air Force 38…… a 10 point victory = a slim WIN!
Wisconsin Badgers (-4.5) over Northwestern Wildcats – PICK: Wisconsin……. FINAL SCORE: Northwestern 31 Wisconsin 17…….. A 14 point defeat to the Mildcats? UW has their worst team in years. Northwestern isn’t even that good. In fact, they stink! LOSS
TCU Horned Frogs (-13.5) over Kansas Jayhawks – One thing we know……. TCU will defeat Kansas soundly. PICK: TCU……… FINAL SCORE: Kansas 27 TCU 26……. a S/U loss for TCU against……ahem….Kansas? HUGE LOSS.

Oklahoma Sooners (-13.5) over Texas Tech Red Raiders – OU is just simply too high-powered for Tech’s weak defense. We wish we would’ve gotten our selection in earlier in the week when OU was only favored by 10 points. Then the spread changed quite a bit as everyone and their mom picked the Sooners. Nevertheless, PICK: Oklahoma
Arizona St. Sun Devils (+7) over Utah Utes – “My Cousin Vinny’s” favorite college team, the “Utes”, are really good. However, they are road favorites at one of our faves…..the ASU Sun Devils! The Devils are home underdogs to the Utes. ASU is bada-bing solid! They are home ‘dogs this week which is a sweet setup in the “Gut’s” mind. I love Coach Herm Edwards, almost as much as I love Joe Pesci. This dude is old-school, kinda like Vincent “Vinny” Gambini. He challenges players to be the best they can be. He’s a motivator. He’s a winner. So is ASU. Like Marisa Tomei, we’re attracted to winners. PICK: Arizona St.
Georgia Bulldogs (-8.5) over Kentucky Wildcats – Coach Stoops has done a great job in Lexington, KY with the Wildcats. They’re hot! They came back and won a crazy game at Missouri last week by a score of 15-14. UK has a good defense. UGA has a better one. 8 and a half points shouldn’t be too hard for Georgia to cover, even on the road in Commonwealth Stadium. PICK: Georgia
GAME OF THE WEEK! – LSU Tigers (+14.5) over Alabama Crimson Tide – I’m pumped for this Saturday night affair on CBS, live from Death Valley! Can LSU hang with ‘Bama? I don’t know but Gary feels really good with 14 and a half points. Earlier in the week it was 13.5 points. Don’t get us wrong, that extra point made all the difference. We could see a 28-14 score or 31-17 or 35-21 or something. Let’s hope LSU does even more than that. We’re hoping for a S/U upset but will be happy with an ATS winner. PICK: LSU
2018 LOCK OF THE YEAR! (PAY NO ATTENTION TO HIS 0-1 RECORD IN 2018’s PREVIOUS LOCK OF THE YEAR SELECTIONS) Notre Dame Fighting Irish (-9.5) over Northwestern Wildcats – I’ve never been more sure about a game than I am about this week’s ND/NU game. Notre Dame is a great team. Northwestern is an average team. In fact, they are the worst 5-3 team I’ve ever seen. They stink. You realize Northwestern almost lost at Rutgers, right? They somehow pulled out an embarrassing 18-15 win in that one. They do find a way to stay in games. I/We don’t know how. After 8 games, Northwestern has a shiny 5-1 record in the B1G but has actually been outscored on the season. They lost by 14 to Duke. They lost by 5 to Akron. Overall, they’re just a very mediocre ballclub. On the other sideline, Notre Dame is awesome. They have a championship caliber defense. They have a solid running game. They are loaded with talent. The Irish should blow the doors off of the “Mildcats”. We expect at least a 20 point victory. PICK: Notre Dame

Alabama is a semi-pro team. Just unreal.Unless they have an off day or a serious injury at QB I don’t see anybody touching them. Their defense reminds me of the ’85 Bears.

‘Bama is unstoppable, or so it seems. There aren’t many teams I’d pick to beat them. Seems like only Georgia and Clemson have a chance. Watch out for Michigan. They could hang with ‘Bama.

I keep saying someone will challenge them. If nobody challenges them we will have to place them as one of the all time greats. But as we know, anything can happen between now and the championship.
