Gary “The Gut” Goombah – Week 5, 2024
Gary did pretty well in Week 4. He won seven of twelve games (58%). For the season, he’s now 52.5% (21 of 40). Can he “up” his game even more in Week 5?
Week 4 Recap
Gary’s Week 4 Selections
NCAA Selections
- Washington Huskies (-11.5) over Northwestern Wildcats – Washington dominated Northwestern, winning 24-5. Result: WON!
- Indiana Hoosiers (-27.5) over Charlotte 49ers – Indiana destroyed Charlotte 52-14, a 38 point victory. Result: WON!
- West Virginia Mountaineers (-2.5) over Kansas Jayhawks – WVU won a squeaker by four points, 32-28, enough for us! Result: WON!
- TCU Horned Frogs (-2.5) over SMU Mustangs – TCU lost by 24 points on the road, a surprising loss. Result: Lost
- California Golden Bears (+2.5) over Florida St. Seminoles – Cal had their chances but ultimately lost by five points, 14-9. Result: Lost
- Oklahoma Sooners (+7.5) over Tennessee Volunteers – Gary was wrong about both teams here. Tennessee looked fantastic, beating the Sooners on their home field by ten points, 25-15. It wasn’t as close as the score indicated either. Result: Lost
“Gary’s Pick 6” NFL Selections
- New York Jets (-6.5) over New England Patriots – The Jets won 24-3. Result: WON!
- Chicago Bears (+1.5) over Indianapolis Colts – Bears stunk it up, losing by five points, 21-16. Result: Lost
- Detroit Lions (-3) over Arizona Cardinals – The Lions won 20-13. Result: WON!
- San Francisco 49ers (-7.5) over Los Angeles Rams – The 49ers were upset by the Rams 27-24. Result: Lost

Gary’s Week 5 Selections
NCAA Selections
Friday Night Special: Miami Hurricanes (-17.5) over Virginia Tech Hokies – The Hurricanes are in their element down in Florida, bringing a real-life hurricane to the shores of America. Miami is on top of their game so far in 2024. Will the Hokies test them? Gary thinks Miami will win by at least 20 points. PICK: Miami
Nebraska Cornhuskers (-10.5) over Purdue Boilermakers – Gary thinks the ‘Huskers will rebound this week at Purdue after losing another close, overtime game at home versus the Fighting Illini. Coach Rhule should have his guys back in the win column over a poor Purdue team. PICK: Nebraska
USC Trojans (-14.5) over Wisconsin Badgers – USC return home to face the Badgers after blowing a late lead at Michigan. USC is really good this year, no doubt. Wisconsin is undergoing changes, plus they lost their starting quarterback against Alabama a couple weeks ago. PICK: USC
Washington State Cougars (+7.5) over Boise State Broncos – This is a tricky game for both teams. I love this matchup, live from Albertson’s Stadium in Boise on the blue turf. Gary is putting his faith in Wazzu QB John Mateer who can do it all, using both his arm and legs. Can Wash St. keep it close at least? Gary thinks so. PICK: Washington St.
Oregon Ducks (-24.5) over UCLA Bruins – Oregon can score with the best of ’em, what else is new? UCLA is really bad so far under new coach DeShaun Foster. We expect the Ducks to roll by 30 or more. PICK: Oregon
LOCK OF THE WEEK: Alabama Crimson Tide (+2.5) over Georgia Bulldogs – When was the last time Alabama was a home underdog? 2007. I know…. 2007! It was Nick Saban’s first year in Tuscaloosa. 17 years later, the Tide once again have a first year head coach in Kalen DeBoer. And once again they are a home ‘dog. This might be heresy, but we think Georgia is overrated right now. Alabama will win this game straight up at home. “Book it Danno!” PICK: Alabama
“Gary’s Pick 6” NFL Selections
N.Y. Jets (-7.5) over Denver Broncos – Last week’s performance by the Jets with Aaron Rodgers and a dominating defense left us a little astounded. This could, COULD be one of the best teams in the NFL. PICK: N.Y. Jets
Cincinnati Bengals (-4) over Carolina Panthers – We know the Bengals folded at home last week against the Commanders. It always takes Cincinnati some time to get warmed up every season. We see them firing it up this week over the lowly Panthers. PICK: Cincinnati
Chicago Bears (-3) over Los Angeles Rams – Don’t forget how good Chicago’s defense is, or at least, could be. Meanwhile, the Rams defense is putrid so far (last in the NFL in yards allowed, 31st in points allowed). This might be a chance for rookie QB Caleb Williams and the Bears offense to get moving forward. PICK: Chicago
Atlanta Falcons (-2.5) over New Orleans Saints – Atlanta is 1-2 but they deserve better than their record. They got hosed last Monday night against the Chiefs when Kyle Pitts was clearly interfered with in the end zone. They will take down the Saints this week. PICK: Atlanta
Los Angeles Chargers (+7.5) over Kansas City Chiefs – The Chiefs are so lucky to be 3-0. They are close to being winless at 0-3. Seriously! All three wins have come down to the end and in all three cases Kansas City got lucky. L.A. will cover this 7.5 points, maybe even winning straight up. PICK: L.A. Chargers
Detroit Lions (-3.5) over Seattle Seahawks – Detroit is one of the best teams in the league, at least that’s what Gary “The Gut” thinks. PICK: Detroit
That’s it for this week. Good luck everybody! And remember……
“Whether rich or poor, thou shalt gamble more” – Gary “The Gut” Goombah’s mantra

The Gut had a great week according to Seattle Mariner’s General Manager Jerry Dipoto who infamously said his goal was to win 54% of the time. No wonder the Mariners have never been to a World Series!

I heard about that comment by Dipoto. Quite strange. I guess in baseball parlance it would mean about 88 wins per season, which is often good enough to make the Playoffs, but not always. In gambling, I guess 55% is supposedly pretty good. It could be worse, look at the White Sox… hovering around 24%.
