Chicago Bears vs San Francisco 49ers Preview

Chicago Bears (3-4) vs San Francisco 49ers (2-4) Preview

As you know from my previous column, I’m not a big believer in the Bears right now. Head Coach Matt Nagy is awful. He deserves to be fired. He deserved it a long time ago. #FireNagy. Having said that, he’s OUT this week…. because of a positive COVID test. So will Chicago do better with an interim head coach on Sunday?

We won’t go so far as to say the Bears will be a better team on Sunday since Nagy won’t be prowling the sidelines covering his ugly face with that “BE YOU” play sheet. (BE YOU?… More like “PEE-YEW”)

Anyway, the interim head coach for this week’s game vs the 49ers will be fourth year Special Teams Coordinator Chris Tabor. Offensive Coordinator Bill Lazor will still be calling the plays. Quarterback Justin Fields will still be out there running around, taking too long in the pocket, and taking sacks (PS Fields isn’t ready to be a pro QB yet). The defense will be without All-World outside linebacker Khalil Mack (OUT: Foot) and maybe defensive tackle Akiem Hicks (Questionable: Groin) and safety Tashuan Gipson (Questionable: Hip).

It doesn’t sound promising for Chicago. However, the San Francisco 49ers aren’t playing very well either. Let’s take a look at the numbers.

Troy Aikman’s Efficiency Ratings (AER)

  • San Francisco 49ers (2-4) : 17th offense, 21st defense
  • Chicago Bears (3-4) : 30th offense, 12th defense

Football Outsiders

  • San Francisco : 14th overall, 16th offense, 13th defense, 13th special teams
  • Chicago : 24th overall, 29th offense, 8th defense, 10th special teams

Team Rankings

  • San Francisco : 18th overall
  • Chicago : 26th overall

Sports Betting Dime

  • San Francisco is favored by 3.5 points at Soldier Field. SportsBettingDime.com’s prediction formula has the 49ers winning by a score of 18.8 to 17.7. Therefore, they think you should bet on the 49ers to win but the Bears to cover the point spread.

Prediction:

The Bears are in disarray, having lost two games in a row, to Green Bay 24-14 and at Tampa Bay 38-3. Meanwhile, San Francisco has lost four straight games, to Green Bay 30-28, Seattle 28-21, at Arizona 17-10, and Indianapolis 30-18.

The 49ers were in the Super Bowl just two seasons ago. Last year they went 6-10 with as many injuries as we’ve ever seen to an NFL team. In a way we almost throw that season out. But now here they are at 2-4 after having faced a difficult early season schedule.

The Bears have faced a tough schedule also, but the eye test shows us that Chicago is just a poor offensive football team right now. Not only should the Bears fire Nagy, but they should re-insert Andy Dalton as starting quarterback. The best chance to win games right now would be to have a solid running game with plays called by Bill Lazor, and then have a passing game headed by Andy Dalton taking deep shots to speed receiver Darnell Mooney with underneath passes going to Allen Robinson, remember him? But no, Nagy and the Bears are more focused on developing ruining Justin Fields, which has been an uproariously ridiculous plan thus far.

The 49ers are the better team, with a better head coach (Super Bowl LIV participant Kyle Shanahan), and a better plan. PICK: San Francisco

Week 8 Prediction: San Francisco 27, Chicago Bears 17

Last week’s Prediction: Tampa Bay Buccaneers 34, Chicago Bears 12
