Gary “The Gut” Goombah : Week 11
“The Gut” is really hot right now. Mr. Goombah is 19-12 since Week 5. He’s so hot that even Paris Hilton is talking. But what is she saying? She’s sayin’……..
Gary had another solid week in Week 10. Here’s what happened:
Week 10 NCAA Selections
Oklahoma Sooners (-13.5) over Texas Tech Red Raiders – OU is just simply too high-powered for Tech’s weak defense. We wish we would’ve gotten our selection in earlier in the week when OU was only favored by 10 points. Then the spread changed quite a bit as everyone and their mom picked the Sooners. Nevertheless, PICK: Oklahoma……….. FINAL SCORE: Oklahoma 51 Texas Tech 46……. OU only won by 5 = LOSS
Arizona St. Sun Devils (+7) over Utah Utes – “My Cousin Vinny’s” favorite college team, the “Utes”, are really good. However, I love Coach Herm Edwards, almost as much as I love Joe Pesci. This dude is old-school, kinda like Vincent “Vinny” Gambini. He challenges players to be the best they can be. He’s a motivator. He’s a winner. So is ASU. Like Marisa Tomei, we’re attracted to winners. PICK: Arizona St……….. FINAL SCORE: Arizona St. 38 Utah 20……. A large 18 point victory for ASU = Big WIN!

Georgia Bulldogs (-8.5) over Kentucky Wildcats – 8 and a half points shouldn’t be too hard for Georgia to cover, even on the road in Commonwealth Stadium. PICK: Georgia……… FINAL SCORE: Georgia 34 Kentucky 17…… A 17 point victory for UGA = Big WIN!
GAME OF THE WEEK! – LSU Tigers (+14.5) over Alabama Crimson Tide – Can LSU hang with ‘Bama? PICK: LSU………. FINAL SCORE: Alabama 29 LSU 0 …………LSU couldn’t hang. A shutout loss at home = Bad LOSS.
2018 LOCK OF THE YEAR! (
PAY NO ATTENTION TO HIS 0-1 RECORD IN 2018’s PREVIOUS LOCK OF THE YEAR SELECTIONS) Notre Dame Fighting Irish (-9.5) over Northwestern Wildcats – I’ve never been more sure about a game than I am about this week’s ND/NU game. Notre Dame is a great team. Northwestern is an average team. The Irish should blow the doors off of the “Mildcats”. We expect at least a 20 point victory. PICK: Notre Dame………. FINAL SCORE: Notre Dame 31 Northwestern 21……. ND led 24-7 at one point and Gary almost bought a new yacht. Then the “Mildcats” made it interesting, as they usually do. Luckily the Irish prevailed with a late touchdown, winning by 10. Phew! AN IMPORTANT WIN! And a Fantastic Victory for our “Lock of the Year!” Selections (Now 1-1 on the season).
2018 Season Totals:
- Week 1 : 1-4
- Week 2 : 2-3
- Week 3 : 2-3
- Week 4 : 1-4
- Week 5 : 4-2
- Week 6 : 4-1
- Week 7 : 2-3
- Week 8 : 4-1
- Week 9 : 2-3
- Week 10 : 3-2
- TOTALS: 25-26 (including 1-1 on “Locks of the Year”)
Gary is almost back in the black after a slow September. Therefore, Week 11 has added importance. It’s not always about the money. It’s about pride.
Week 11 NCAA Selections (All selections are ATS. Point spreads are from Friday’s Chicago Tribune.)
This week’s commonality is that we’re going with mostly home teams. Now that we’ve hit November, weather starts playing a bigger role. And what happens to people when they’re cold and facing adversity? They wanna go home, go inside, and drink hot chocolate. But there’s no hot cocoa on the visitors sideline. So stick with home teams.
Gary “The Gut” chose three home favorites and two home underdogs this week, along with one road ‘dog. As that Coastal Carolina coach David Bennett infamously proclaimed, “We need more dawgs!”
Boise St. Broncos (+3) over Fresno St. Bulldogs – When was the last time the Broncos were home ‘dogs? Glad you asked. I looked it up. September 8, 2001 vs Washington State! I know, right? That’s almost unbelievable. Anyway, since Fresno travels to Boise to play on the smurf turf at Albertsons Stadium on Friday night (tonight) as a road favorite, that streak will be broken. You might recall these teams played each other last year in back-to-back weeks, once on each team’s home-field as they were scheduled at Fresno in the regular season finale and then had a rematch at Boise in the MWC Championship game. Fresno won the first while Boise won the rematch. Fresno has not won at Boise since…….1984. PICK: Boise State
West Virginia Mountaineers (-11.5) over TCU Horned Frogs – WVU is 7-1 and ranked 9th in the nation. Like it or not, TCU (4-5) is just not very good this year. The ‘Eers should be favored by more than 11 and a half in my opinion. Gary agreed. PICK: West Virginia
Arizona St. Sun Devils (-13.5) over UCLA Bruins – Once again, we have a matchup that screams MISMATCH! We have a good team against a terrible team. ASU is 5-4 (6-3 ATS) while UCLA is 2-7 (3-6 ATS). The Sun Devils are playing at home in the Valley of the Sun. Sure it’s a larger spread than we like but 13 and the hook is better than 14 and the hook. PICK: Arizona St.
USC Trojans (-5) over Cal Bears – Both teams are 5-4 overall. But one thing is grinding our gears. Southern Cal is good, and California is bad. They’re overrated…..and they’re on the road in the Coliseum. The Trojans are only favored by 5 points. They should cover 5 easily. PICK: USC
Miami Hurricanes (+3.5) over Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets – Our only road ‘dog Selection this week are the ‘Canes from Miami. I know they’ve been playing like garbage lately. I know GT has been winning some upsets. The tide shall turn on Saturday night in Atlanta. The ‘Canes defense is solid and specializes in TFL’s. They also thrive with takeaways. Expect some fumbles and interceptions, especially when the pass-poor Yellow Jackets face some 3rd and longs. PICK: Miami
NFL Special!
Cincinnati Bengals (+5.5) over New Orleans Saints – The Bengals (5-3) are at home in Cincinnati. The Saints (7-1) are coming off of that emotional big game last week in the SuperDome versus the Los Angeles Rams. I expect a letdown this week. Plus, New Orleans must travel to Ohio. Traditionally, the Saints are a much better home team. The Saints weakness is their pass defense and the Bengals offense has been underrated this year under their new Offensive Coordinator Bill Lazor. According to Troy Aikman’s AER, Cincinnati is 9th in offense going against a Saints defense that is 28th. “The Gut” feels it with this home ‘dog. PICK: Cincinnati
That’s it for now. Mr. Goombah wishes you good luck with your Selections this weekend! And remember…….”Home is where the Heart is”, so “Go Big or Go Home.”
